Colombia is a South American country located south of Panama with coastlines on both the North Pacific and the Caribbean Sea. Because of its location Colombia is blessed with wonderful tropical weather and comfortable breezes. The terrain of Colombia ranges from the low lying coasts to the mountainous Andes.
Bogotá is the capital of Colombia. It is famous for many festivals such as the Iberoamerica Theater Festival, the largest of its kind in the world. Colombia hosts a large rock fest, Rock the Park, with rock bands from all over the world. The National Museum of Bogotá is also located here.
There are many things to do and see outside the capital. On the North Coast, in the town of Barranquilla, a yearly Carnival is held. This is similar to Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Cali is great resort destination. In Cartagena you will find a city of contrasts. Old world colonial buildings are juxtaposed with modern skyscrapers. Medellin is a very popular tourist destination and known as the City of Eternal Spring. There are many textile mills here along with markets, museums, and galleries.
One very unique location is Isla Gorgona. The Colombian government has turned this former prison island into a nature reserve. You will be able to see many different forms of wildlife here. Isla Gorgona is also a very popular scuba diving destination.
When shopping in the markets look for clothing as the textiles woven in Colombia are of a very high quality. Leather is plentiful and many people come for the Colombian emeralds and gold. Make sure to pick up a Mochila, a traditional woven hand bag.
Colombia is a food paradise. You will find some of the best beef here with a smooth buttery texture. Bunuelos are fried corn flour balls served with cheese. Coffee comes in infinite varieties and hot chocolate is served for breakfast. Aguardiente is the national drink with a taste of anise.
All major cities have airports. Bogotá and Medellin have modern international airports and make for easy arrivals and departures. There are daily flights from Europe and America.
